Following a sub-par lineup in July, Microsoft appears to have heeded the cry of its Xbox Live Gold subscribers by giving them some games worth playing. Not only that, but they will be getting their money’s worth, too.
August’s Games with Gold were first announced by XBL spokesman Major Nelson; combined, the four free games are worth around $100 (£76). As always, there will be two free Xbox One games and two free Xbox 360 games that are playable on Xbox One via backwards compatibility.
From the 1st of August until the end of the month, Xbox gamers can claim a free copy of the gorgeous racing game Forza Horizon 2 for Xbox One. And from the 16th until the 15th of September, the action-fantasy game For Honor is also up for grabs. Despite not selling especially well upon release last year, this so-called “shooter with swords” received plenty of positive reviews – the online versus modes are especially competitive.
The last gen offerings are also generous; the first course is a slice of petrifying horror with Dead Space 3, which combines the tense over-the-shoulder action of Resident Evil with a story and setting reminiscent of sci-fi cinema classics like Aliens, Solaris and, Event Horizon. The second Xbox 360 game, a Disney kids title, couldn’t be more different. Disney Epic Mickey 2: Power of Two will be available from the 16th to the 31st of August.
And don’t forget that until September 15th you can colourful multi-player puzzler Death Squared until August 15th too. Watch the video below for a quick overview of the kind of gameplay you can expect from August’s Games with Gold titles.

Games with Gold: Everything you need to know
What is Xbox Games with Gold?
Xbox Games with Gold is Microsoft’s version of PlayStation Plus, a monthly collection of free games for Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Once a game has left Games with Gold, you’ll still get to keep the games and play them whenever so long as you maintain an active Xbox Live Gold subscription.
How much is Xbox Games with Gold?
Games with Gold comes part and parcel with an Xbox Live Gold subscription.
Picking up a subscription to Xbox Live Gold costs as little as £6 per month, but can be bought as a three-month package for £15 or 12 months for £40. For that price, you’ll get access to online play for Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as exclusive deals on the Microsoft Store, cloud saves, capture editing suites and free games via Games with Gold. Not too shabby.
How often is Xbox Games with Gold updated?
Technically, Xbox Games with Gold changes every first of the month. However, Microsoft actually has a staggered system for releasing its Games with Gold titles. Unlike Sony, who releases all six of its free games in one go, Microsoft tends to release two titles for the first half of the month, with another two replacing them for the second half.
Xbox Games with Gold also gives you one Xbox One game and one backwards-compatible Xbox 360 title at the same time. Those are then replaced with another Xbox One and Xbox 360 title mid-month. Sometimes Microsoft allows for indie titles to go via Games with Gold for an entire month, so you could end up with five games instead of four.
