Huawei P20: 360 video renders show triple camera and more

As you may have noticed, It’s possible that the P20 will keep the 3.5mm headphone jack. Apparently though, this could be an infrared blaster (or IR blaster) used for controlling appliances around the house. The dual camera set-up on the front of the device is rumored to have a sensor that will allow facial recognition.

With a 5.7 inch-display with a 1080 x 2280 resolution, the P20 will have an aspect ratio of 19.9. A fingerprint scanner can also be seen in the video; a feature that isn’t present on renders of the P20 Plus as you’ll see below.

Regarding the internals, the P20 will pack the Kirin 970 chipset, combining AI components and an octa-core CPU allowing it to run at a speed of 2.36GHz. As with the Huawei Mate 10, the P20 will also pack the ATM Mali-G72 MP12.

Huawei P20 Plus renders

The renders of the P20 Plus show a similar design to the iPhone X, with a notch as well as the triple camera. It’s anticipated that the P20 Plus will also have a thin, sleek design with an almost bezel-less display.

What’s interesting here is that the renders show only one of the two prototypes designed by Huawei, the version without the physical home button. We will have to wait and see which prototype Huawei decides to choose.

Again, it has been discussed whether the port on the edge of the P20 Plus is a 3.5mm headphone jack or an IR blaster. Some say the port is too small so therefore it’s likely to be the latter.

Of course, the highlight on both devices will be that triple camera, which Huawei teased on their event invitations.

Which feature are you most excited about?

Release date and price

We now know that the eagerly anticipated Huawei P20 will be unveiled during a special event taking place on March 27.

The invitations received reveal that this event will involve the unveiling of Huawei’s new flagship devices, and we can assume that the P20 will be the center of attention. Located in Paris, the event will be all about the showcasing of its latest technologies, and CEO Richard Yu will be in attendance to present the flagship. Huawei and its subsidiary Honor have previously presented smartphones in the city.

The Paris event should also see the release of the Huawei P20 Lite, the more entry-level version of the P20 sisters. According to the latest leaked images of the Huawei P20 Lite it won’t carry the triple camera, but has other distinguishing features, including the headphone jack.

Initially rumored to be called the P11, the P20 is set to be a big advancement on its predecessor, if it’s going to live up to the name.

There were many rumors regarding the release date. Bruce Lee, Huawei’s Vice President of Handsets Product Line, said during an interview with Android Central that the brand would be likely to launch new devices at the Mobile World Congress. We know that now this isn’t the case and we won’t be seeing the P20 at MWC this year. Sorry, Huawei fans: you will have to wait!

The delay is supposedly due to preparing for the American markets, stabilizing supply and demand for the next chipsets and improving the standards of the triple camera. It could also be that Huawei doesn’t wish to compete for the spotlight with Samsung. Price-wise, we could expect the P20 to be around $800 if we go by the launch price of the P10.

Design: the in-trend notch, colors and codenames

Huawei is preparing to battle the competition with three new P20 series devices. According to some charts leaked on Chinese social network Weibo, the three devices will have different designs and the range will be diversified just like Apple’s iPhones: a basic model (perhaps the ‘Lite’), a Plus and a Pro model very similar to iPhone X. Since the latest leaks divide the three along the names P20, P20 Plus and P20 Lite, it’s possible that there will be variance in the naming convention among different regions, or that Hauwei has simply updated the name scheme along the development line.

By analyzing the firmware test of the alleged P20 Pro (which is hidden under the code name EMILY) Mishaal Rahman of XDA has found several details that refer to the presence of a notch. First of all, an image showing a black zone similar to that of the iPhone X in the display area, even if it is smaller.

Then there is the system property ro.config.hw_notch_size with coordinates that should identify the position of the notch, as well as the boot animation of 2244×1080 pixels compared to the display of 2160×1080 pixels (the missing pixel space could be what’s taken up by the notch).

Roland Quandt tweeted and revealed the colors and codenames of the different models:

If you’re a fan of English literature, these may be familiar to you. They correspond to the Brontë sisters, famous 19th-century poets and novelists, which is certainly a romantic touch! Given how the smartphone market works, it’s still possible that the same phones could have different names in different regions, and possibly different color options.

We also have some ‘in the wild’ pictures of one of the P20 series smartphones. The first images of the alleged Huawei P20 Plus, including the much-discussed “notch”, have leaked online.

The leak also shows us an image of the back covered with a protective case. Nothing in the body design is visible except the photo module. This photo would deny all the rumors that have been leaked so far about the presence of a triple camera: in fact, we find only two sensors accompanied by an LED flash.

The design really closely resembles that of Apple’s iPhone X, but we know what to expect from Huawei now: the company is perfectly able to innovate and create valid and competitive products but seems to want to capture some of Cupertino’s glamour in this case.

This ‘in the wild’ snaps seem to contract another set of leaks, however, that purport to be renders of the Huawei P20 with protective cases. And here, the much hyped triple camera does make an appearance:

Interesting, but not quite as convincing as the ‘in the wild’ photos of the Plus model. Still, perhaps Huawei has some surprises in store for us. All we have to do is wait for the Paris event to clear all doubts.

Features: Three eyed-monsters with front-located fingerprint sensor

Huawei appears to throwing their weight behind the three-camera setup in 2018. Their upcoming PCE series is already confirmed to have three main cameras equipped with Leica lenses. One of these cameras would offer 40MP and a 5X hybrid zoom. The three sensors should be able to capture 100% more light than the previous generation and should be accompanied by automatic scene recognition and intelligent management of settings thanks to artificial intelligence. This package could also appear on the P20 because, as we know, the brand always places a lot of emphasis on this component. Schematics leaked on the Chinese social network Weibo appear to confirm this triple camera arrangement.

The front fingerprint reader remains in place

The design of the Huawei P20 and P20 Plus will be more classic and will resemble that of the Huawei Mate 10 with a fingerprint reader at the front and a display covering most of the front surface. On the back and surrounding the camera section, it seems there will be a band with a different finish to the bodywork, as already seen on the models in the manufacturer’s Mate series.

Technical specifications

What else do we know about the future P20? The two basic models will integrate the Kirin 970 processor with artificial intelligence that is already in use in the Mate line and now also on the Honor View 10. Next to the CPU unit we will find 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB or 128 GB of internal memory.

As for the Huawei P20 Pro, on the other hand, there seems to be a slight upgrade with a Kirin 975 CPU (the only difference in comparison to the Kirin 970 should be the higher clock frequency), 6 GB of RAM in the 128 GB and 8 GB version of RAM in the 256 GB version. On the display side, the device looks like it will be fitted with a 6.01-inch Samsung LCD panel.

The software will obviously be Android 8.0 Oreo and EMUI as a skin, but it could arrive in version 8.0.1. The P20s should then support Easy Projection (already seen on the Mate 10) and therefore offer a USB 3.1 Type C port.
