Apex Legends: Titanfall developer launches new free-to-play battle royale game

Respawn has launched a battle royale game. The Titanfall developer clearly wants to make the most of the booming genre, and has given both consumer and competition a healthy shock by pulling an entire game seemingly out of thin air.

The game is called Apex Legends, and the official announcement took place yesterday at 8pm. The game then went and launched, as rumours had suggested, and is currently available to download on console and PC. For free.

The premise is one that has become pretty familiar in the past two years. In a nutshell, it’s a free-to-play battle royale game set in the Titanfall universe. Intriguingly, this means none of those giant machines they call Titans; just one huge map and a whole bunch of players fighting to be the last one standing.

Like Fortnite, you won’t have to pay to play, though there are in-game microtransactions. These are, of course, limited to cosmetic items.

A weekend of hefty leaks from eSports journalist Rod Breslau gave us a good idea of what to expect from Apex Legends, and they were all bang on. The developers opted for a slightly smaller player count – 60, rather than the standard 100 – and have introduced a class system to further distance themselves from the norm. Players can fight alone, as a duo, or in a group of three; otherwise, you’ll find that plenty of standard battle royale mechanics make an appearance.

Breslau reported that Respawn invited a select few streamers to test Apex Legends in Los Angeles last week. In fact, the game has been in the works for some time now. In August 2017, Respawn and EA revealed that they were working on two new projects, one of which has since been revealed as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

The new game uses the same graphics engine as Titanfall 2, and will do battle with Call of Duty’s Blackout mode, Epic Games’ Fortnite, and the upcoming Battlefield V battle royale mode. It’s out now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
