Why Linux Mint and Ubuntu are Better Than Windows

Technology is fast developing. Dozens of devices are being penned into ideas and invented every year. Programs and mobile devices are made better and upgraded to fit the new generation’s lifestyle. You would often hear new updates for Windows and Apple products, with developers talking about its new features that keep making life better for its customers. What most people don’t know is that there are more software than these two major manufacturers. Linux is one of these software that is available on any desktop computer. And it just might be better than Windows! Here, we compare Linux’ popular distributions, Linux Mint and Ubuntu, over a Windows based PC.

What is Linux?

Linux’ is also a popular operating system that has different designs and features that every user would appreciate. It was created in 1991 by a team of developers, aiming to provide a free operating system that is user friendly. They first started with personal computers, then as their popularity grew, their interface is now available on smartphones as well. It comes in different distributions you can choose from, depending on your preference. Ubuntu and Linux Mint are the two most popular ones. What makes these two better than a Windows operating system?

Why Linux Mint and Ubuntu are better than Windows

  1. Customizability:

Linux is known for its ability to customize its design without limit. Create your own theme and there is no boundary to what you want. Windows allows you to tweak its design to your preference, but it isn’t as vast as compared to Ubuntu Mint or Linux.

  1. Cost

Like mentioned, Linux Mint and Ubuntu are free of charge and very easy to set up. Simply install it into your computer and you’re good to go! As for Windows, it comes with a hefty price tag that has similar features to a Linux already.

With Linux Mint and Ubuntu, you are able to get productivity software like LibreOffice. For Windows, they do have Microsoft Office, but it comes with ANOTHER hefty price tag that you will need to pay annually! Linux also includes graphic tools, while Windows does not.

  1. Apps

Both Linux and Windows have app stores. You will be able to download any app of your preference here. They have a lot of categories depending on what you want or need, from productivity to entertainment apps. What makes both systems different is that Linux offers over 40,000 apps in their app store, while Windows offers a bit less than 10,000.

  1. Compatibility

Windows requires high standards when it comes to installing their latest update, Windows 10. Your computer will need 1GHz and 1GB RAM, along with about 20GB of free space on your hard drive to install the system.

Linux Mint and Ubuntu will not require such high standards, but usually what a normal PC would have. That’s what makes it flexible and compatible with many PCs. It only requires 512MB of RAM and only 5GB on your hard drive. If your PC has lower specs than that, you will still be able to find a good distribution from Linux that is compatible with your PC.

  1. Security

Windows and Linux have their own security programs that ward off viruses and hackers. But the problem with Windows is that hackers tend to focus on popular operating systems, with Linux out of the list. Windows is also known for its many security issues. They end up developing more programs for security because of that, and it ends up with it taking up much more space. Many people have said that you won’t even need to install an antivirus program on a Linux!

  1. Performance

Performance wise, you are able to utilize the Linux Mint or Ubuntu distributions more so than a Windows operating system. Linux is much easier to pick up, and because it requires less space and RAM, it would be able to perform faster.

Many Windows users complain that Windows operating systems slow down over time, due to the many updates it requires that packs in too much. That, and it can also be a tactic for the developers to make people want to upgrade, making more profit!

  1. Updates

All operating systems have updates, and Linux and Windows are no different. The main issue with Windows is that they have TOO much updates, constantly requiring more space on your hard drive. It’s also a waste of time and internet speed constantly updating your operating system. Whereas Linux Mint or Ubuntu gives updates when needed, and it’s still free of charge.

  1. User-Friendly

Linux is more user-friendly than a Windows 10, because of those darn Live Tiles that Windows installed! These Live Tiles from Windows are much better for laptops or tablets that have touch screen. It’s difficult to navigate your way through the desktop with Live Tiles, especially when you’re using your mouse and keyboard. This is where Linux Mint and Ubuntu win, as they are more user-friendly and cater to both touch screen and non-touch screen desktop computers.

Basically, Linux Mint and Ubuntu have a more simple interface and design that is easy to pick up. Windows, on the other hand, is a mix of both new and old design, making it more confusing for their users to navigate through.

These are just some of the advantages Ubuntu and Linux Mint have over Windows. For those on a budget, Linux is definitely the better choice. You will be able to see the great difference and advantages Linux has, whether you’re tech savvy or just a beginner to technology. Simple to get, all you need to do is to download the operating system for free onto your computer, and you’re good to go! You will be able to find steps on how to install it, including the download link, in Linux’ official website.
