Samsung Galaxy S8 Active revealed in leaked images

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active leaked images – If your life involves lots of running, jumping and climbing trees – or more likely, you’re a clumsy clutz – the Samsung Galaxy S8 might not be for you. It’s that magical combination of very expensive and extremely delicate – just like an antique, only that smartphone value tends to only go in one direction. Worse, the S8 is a particularly awkward customer to fix: iFixit gave it a repairability score of just 4/10, noting that “front and back glass make for double the crackability, and strong adhesive on both makes it tough to access the internals for any repair”.

Good news then for the perpetually butter-fingered: the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is here. All the power, with a lot less of the fragility. Sure, it doesn’t look as stylish as the regular S8 out of the box, but if you compare the two after a few drops, the Active will likely gain the upper hand. It’s playing the long game.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active: what do we know?

The images above come from a post in the Android Central forums, since deleted but documented here. Before vanishing, the mysterious owner took the time to answer some questions: No, it doesn’t scratch easily. No, there’s no “Active button” like on previous models – but there is one for Bixby. Yes, it’s fatter than the S8 – around 1.5x as thick. And yes, the glass is flat, which should make it both less fragile and easier to fix.

Most pleasingly of all, the Galaxy S8 Active seems to have a whopping 4,000mAh battery included. For comparison, the S8’s is 3,000mAh and the S8+ has a 3,500mAh battery included, so that’s a fairly substantial improvement. And given that neither of the current S8s struggled for stamina (16hrs 45mins for the S8 and 20hrs 33mins for the S8+ in our tests), this promises to be one long-lasting device.

Don’t get too excited, though: the Galaxy S7 Active never made it to the UK (it also had trouble following through on its waterproof promise). It would be a shame if the Galaxy S8 Active didn’t make it over here: the number of cracked phone screens I see on the Tube every morning tells me that ruggedness should really be a higher priority in phone design.
