#SurfacePhone #Mobiles – Microsoft Surface Phone release date, specs: Patent hints on-screen fingerprint scanner? : Microsoft remains tight-lipped about the release date of its upcoming Surface Phone. However, new reports surfaced that it could include an on-screen fingerprint scanner.
According to reports, the Redmond-based company has published a patent that points out a potential on-screen fingerprint scanner technology is being developed, which could be featured in the upcoming Surface Phone.
Based on the patent, the tech giant will have to develop a “waveguide” or a “lightguide” on the transparent cover of the screen. This will avoid stacking too many layers on the glass to place the fingerprint sensors.
If this will be carried out on the much-awaited Microsoft Surface Phone, then this will be a huge step ahead of the biggest smartphone makers in the market – Samsung and Apple. The fingerprint scanners are so far placed off the touch screen.
It is usually placed either on the home button or at the back of the phone near the camera. Apple’s recently unveiled iPhone 7 also had a huge change of home button since it is no longer a physical button that you could press on but just a touch button where the fingerprint sensor is placed.
If fingerprint scanners are also placed on screen, Microsoft can also eliminate the home button and extend the screen display. However, users should take this rumor with a grain of salt since a patent does not always translate to production right away. Sometimes, patents are shelved and canceled; sometimes, they are developed for a long time.
As for the phone’s specs, it is rumored that the Surface Phone will debut the Redstone 2 Windows 10 mobile update. Under the hood, it may also be powered by Intel’s Kaby Lake processing chip.
A 5.7-inch 2K AMOLED display may also be expected. For its camera, it may sport a 21-megapixel rear lens and an 8-megapixel front lens. Microsoft Surface Phone is speculated to come out sometime in 2017. Source: ecumenicalnews
