How to Fix Secure Connection Failed in Mozilla Firefox


Normally, Major web browsers warn its users when it find any error with SSL certificates of any https websites. Different browsers show different warning messages. Mozilla Firefox is one of the most popular web browsers which warn its users by showing the message “Secure Connection Failed”. It’s a pretty good thing. But, Sometimes, It may not show this warning properly. As a result, User may not visit many https websites which clearly hurt user experience. Before, Following my suggestion, Please make sure, Your PC’s date, time, time zone are correct and you are using latest mozilla firefox. We will just follow 3 methods to fix this problem. These are:

Modify Firefox Configuration:

At first we will modify some ssl related settings from about:config of firefox. In most cases, It will work.

First of all, You will need to type about:config in the address bar and hit enter. Then, You will see a new window where you will find warning message “This might void your warranty“. Don’t worry. Just click on “I accept Risk” to go forward to fix secure connection failed problem.

After doing it, Search for browser.ssl_override_behavior and double click on it. Then, Change its value from 1 to 2. Then, Search for security.ssl.enable_ocsp_stapling. Double click on it to change its value to false.

Now, Restart mozilla firefox and see if it fixes secure connection failed error.

Sometimes, You may still encounter this error. There is an option that will surely fix your problem. But, I hardly recommend it. Because, It will disable secure connection failed warning message for all http or https site with good or bed cert. Anyway, You will just need to find browser.xul.error_pages.expert_bad_cert in about:config. Then, Set its value to True.

Verify Proxy Settings for Firefox:

Sometimes, Your proxy settings for this browser can produce that warning message. So, You can just verify if it is set to the default settings or not. To do it,

  • At first, Click on three line icons and choose Options.
  • Then, Click on Advanced and then go to Network tab.
  • Now, Click on Settings from connection section.
  • Make sure Use system proxy settings is marked.

Modify Antivirus / Firewall Settings to Fix Secure Connection Failed in Firefox:

All popular antivirus, firewall and internet security programs have SSL scan feature. That sometimes give you false positive result. It may interrupt to access some https site. As a result firefox may give you such warning message. So, To “fix secure connection failed”, We must disable or modify this feature from these programs. Different programs have different options to turn on / off or modify this feature. You can check user manual to know about it.
