How to Fix Inaccessible Boot Device BSOD

In past, I had introduced several blue screen of death problems and their solutions. After a long time, I’ve come with a new BSOD. Recently, So many windows 10 users have reported they’ve faced a new BSOD called Inaccessible Boot Device. When i searched online about it, I found a few windows 7 and 8 users also encountered it in past. Anyway, In this article i will try to give you some solutions to fix it.


Reasons Behind Inaccessible_Boot_Device:

This error mostly related to your hard disk. But any other things can cause this BSOD. Here are the main reasons behind this error.

  • Corrupted Hard Disk
  • Problematic BIOS Settings
  • Any incompatible hardware
  • Corrupted or missing system files.

Inaccessible_boot_device error only occurs when windows can’t find or access boot partition. If you have made any recent changes to your PC, That may have relation with this bug.


Symptoms are quite common. It appears suddenly like other BSODs and restart your PC. Sometimes, You may not be able to access your computer. Because, It may appear during startup and automatically restart your PC. Again that blue screen comes and does the same thing like before.

How to Fix Inaccessible Boot Device Error:

I will introduce several methods that i found online and can be helpful to you.

Method 1: Run chkdsk Command

This can be your first method to try. Running chkdsk repairs basic problems of your partition. So, It has a good chance to fix inaccessible boot device error. If you can access your PC, You have to follow these things –

  • Press Windows Key + X from keyboard.
  • Choose Command Prompt (Admin).
  • Type chkdsk C: /f and hit Enter. It will check and repair your HDD problems.

Sometimes, You may not access your PC. In that case, You can boot your PC in safe mode with command prompt mode. To do it, Follow the bootable media method from this article. Instead of choosing Startup Settings, You will choose the option Command Prompt.

Method 2: Remove Newly Installed Software and Hardware

Sometimes, Newly installed hardware or software can cause this problem. So, You can completely remove any software or hardware that you have installed recently and after that you have started facing inaccessible boot device error.

Method 3: Updating Drivers

This method is applicable when you can access you PC. If this blue screen error comes frequently and hamper your work, You can check for new updates of all drivers of your PC. To know how to do it, You can read this article: Update Drivers Windows

Method 4: System Restore

Inaccessible boot device error may have started appearing because of some changes of your PC. You may not know which changes these are.  In that case, System restore is an excellent way to fix blue screen problem.

Method 5: Remove Secondary Hard-Disk or External Hard Disk

Some users have multiple hard-disks in their PC. If you are one of them and facing inaccessible_boot_device error during startup, This method is for you. Just remove other harddisk from your PC. If you have connected any external hard disk, Remove it too. Now, See if the problem still exists.

Method 6: Run These Commands in Recovery Mode to Fix Inaccessible Boot Device BSOD

I know all of the methods may not work for all users. Here is an excellent method that can fix your problem. You can boot into safe mode with command prompt that i mentioned in method 1. In command prompt, Type these commands and hit enter for each.

CMD> bootrec /scanos
CMD> bootrec /rebuildbcd
CMD> bootrec /fixmbr
CMD> bootrec /fixboot

I hope, This method will fix the problem.

Method 7: Modifying or Resetting BIOS Settings

This is an advanced method to fix Inaccessible Boot Device error. Sometimes, By mistake you may change your BIOS settings and that may cause the problem. Again, Modifying BIOS settings after facing this BSOD may fix the it. Here are the instructions –

  • Turn Your PC Off.
  • Press on the power button.
  • When your PC is booting, Press F2 from keyboard which will lead you to the BIOS Options.
  • Now, Find the option like Sata Mode or Sata Operation. Probably, You will find it in Main or Advanced tab.
  • Set the Sata Mode or operation to AHCI instead of IDE or ATA.
  • Now, Save the settings and restart your PC.

I hope, This time it will fix inaccessible boot device. If it doesn’t work, You can restore the BIOS settings to default sate. Here are the things to do –

  • Open BIOS options like before.
  • Press F9 from keyboard.
  • Now, Save the settings and restart your PC.

Now, See if the problem still exists or not.

Method 8: “INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE” after installing a third-party ATA-miniport driver or change the SATA mode

According to Microsoft, If you install a third-party ATA-miniport driver and reboot or  after you use the BIOS setup of a Windows 8-based computer to change the Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) mode of the boot drive to use either the Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) specification or redundant array of independent disks (RAID) features, you receive the following error message when the computer is restarted:


This is also applicable for Windows 10. In this case, You can fix this error very easily. You can read this article from Microsoft which may help you.

Method 9: Reset or Clean Install:
